Jihad Al-Shamie, a Syrian native, was shot dead on Wednesday after he drove into people outside a synagogue and stabbed two of them to death. This happened on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish Calendar. Al-Shamie's father had previously praised Hamas for their actions in the October 7th massacre, posting celebrations on X. Al-Shamie had previously been put on bail for rape charges. While Al-Shamie was not on a terrorist watchlist, he did have a criminal past.
In 2012, he sent death threats to conservative parliament member John Howell after the MP supported Israel's right of self-defense.
The leader of the UK's reform party said: “The whole Jewish community in Britain [is] now deeply fearful. Within just a few hours of this horrific incident, we saw … pro-Palestinian flags on the streets, people out, previously unplanned, demonstrating. But here’s the truth of it, they weren’t demonstrating, they were actually celebrating,”
As of now, there are six total in custody. On Friday, three more were arrested in the investigation. Officers were sent to synagogues around the UK soon after this event.
